Setting the Scene

Richmond-upon-Thames is a historic borough of southwest London that was formed in the 16th century during Henry VIII’s reign. It was recently listed as the best place to live in the capital, following a government survey that noted its superb open spaces, excellent eateries, historic architecture, good schools and low crime rate. The historic roads around the centre of Richmond are particularly sought-after. Ormand Road, where The Rosary is located, is just moments from the restaurants, shops and station at Richmond as well as Richmond Park and the schools for which the area is renowned.

The Grand Tour

Entry to the house is via a gate that opens into a front courtyard garden. A paved approach, overlooking the private garden below, leads to the front door. This opens into a large hallway with a central staircase and reception rooms on either side. To the right is a living room with natural pine panelling, a cast iron fireplace in one corner and sash windows in two aspects. To the left is the drawing room, with painted panels and a beautiful bow window framing views over the foliage of neighbouring gardens. Hardwood parquet flooring extends across the level, lending a sense of continuity to the space.

The staircase descends to the lower-ground level, where the dining room can be found on the left. Oak flooring in a herringbone pattern accentuates the natural light streaming in through the pair of French windows, which open onto the terrace and the south-facing garden. A kitchen lies beyond, down a short set of stairs, neatly set within the elegant arches of the former vaults. The tiled floor conceals underfloor heating, while joinery by Roundhouse has been set against smart stainless steel units by Alpes Inox and an electric Aga. Ahead of the staircase is a shower room with a guest WC, while to the right is a bedroom with direct access to the garden.

The first floor is occupied by the main bedroom suite. On one side is the bedroom, a cosy gas fire in its corner, and on the other an enormous bathroom tiled in marble and home to a free-standing bath.  There are two further bedrooms on the second floor, both with plenty of built-in storage, and a shower room.

The Great Outdoors

The Rosary has two sizeable outdoor areas, both of which receive copious amounts of sunshine. The lower garden is the larger of the two spaces; paved and walled, it is a wonderfully private space, partially shaded by the verandah of the upper walkway.

Out and About

The Rosary is a few streets away from Friars Stile Road, noted for its excellent and comprehensive collection of shops and eateries; namely, Italian restaurant La Luna di Luca, popular gastropub The Malborough, L’Amandine Patisserie and Coffee House, Richmond Hill Bakery and The Good Wine Shop. The Richmond Theatre is nearby, as is Petersham Nurseries with its excellent restaurant and garden shop. The River Thames is just a stone’s throw from Ormand Road – the perfect spot for a slow Sunday stroll and a gateway into central London for avid walkers.

Quick access to central London is available from Richmond train station and Richmond Underground station (District Line), which lie a few hundred metres away from the house.
