The Grand Tour
Entry is to a communal lobby overlooked by an original stained-glass window that sets the tone for the spaces within. There is a recently installed video entry system and secure bike storage for residents. A staircase and lift provide access to the third floor, where the apartment occupies a tranquil position at the back of the building, removed from the main road’s noise and traffic.
The front door opens to the hall, which connects all parts of the home. Striking original features such as a series of neo-Gothic arches and ecclesiastical stonework are paired with white-painted walls and ceramic tiles. Velux rooflights throughout maximise natural light across the day.
Positioned immediately to the right, the kitchen is fitted with off-white shaker cabinets complemented by oak surfaces and a full-height marble splashback. There is a large butler sink, and integrated appliances by Bosch and Smeg include an induction hob, oven, extractor fan, fridge and washing machine. Overhead cupboards provide plenty of storage, and a wooden clothes airer hangs from the ceiling.
The plan continues to an airy open-plan dining and sitting room, where a faux-leaded east-facing window and a large rooflight ensure optimal illumination throughout the day. The dining area is anchored by a bespoke built-in library.
Accessible from the kitchen are two double bedrooms, brightened by central rooflights. The largest of the two is appointed as the principal bedroom, while the second serves as a tranquil study.
The bathroom has white-painted exposed brickwork and has a comfortable dual shower and traditional fittings.
Out and About
St James Court is ideally positioned for the best of
Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. Popular haunts like E Pellicci, The Sun, Coupette and Satan's Whiskers are a short distance away, as are pubs The Approach Tavern, The Camel (which serves delicious pies), restaurant Bistrotheque and coffee shop O-Zone.
Beloved Arnold Circus is a short walk away with Leila’s Shop, greengrocers and café offering fresh produce all year round. Rochelle Canteen is around the corner for seasonal fare, set within what once was a primary school for the estate.
Redchurch Street is peppered with beautiful shops such as APC, Aesop and Labour and Wait, as well as local favourites Allpress Coffee, Dishoom, The Smoking Goat, Brat and Jolene. Spitalfields and Shoreditch offer further dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities, with restaurants including Ottolenghi, Crispin, and St. John Bread & Wine.
There are several green spaces nearby, including Weaver’s Fields, Bethnal Green Garden (which lies next to the Young V&A), Haggerston Park and London Fields, with its heated lido. Victoria Park and the adjacent Regent’s Canal are slightly further afield but still accessible on foot. There are also city farms in both Spitalfields, to the south, and on the edge of Hackney Road.
The ever-popular Columbia Road flower market is recommended for a Sunday morning stroll, followed by London Fields and Lido, which are also near.
Transport links are excellent; both Bethnal Green Underground (Central line) and Overground (Weaver line) are nearby. Whitechapel station is only slightly further away and runs the Elizabeth, District and Hammersmith and City lines, along with the Windrush branch of the Overground. The area is also well-served by buses and is within walking distance of the City, Liverpool Street and Old Street.
