Reporting to: Commercial Director


The Head of Appraisals is part of the management team at The Modern House & Inigo. The principal goal of the role is to help grow our core UK business – home sales in the UK – by leading high-performing teams that are responsible for winning business. These teams look after prospective clients from the moment they express an interest to the point their home is on the market. That means delivering a brilliant client service, winning pitches and putting together compelling listings. We expect managers to be ‘doers’ too, so the role is also directly client-facing. The Head of Appraisals will pitch the business to prospective clients, with a focus on new business streams (for example, new builds).


The Head of Appraisals core responsibilities are to:

  • Set team and individual targets and develop strategy to meet them
  • Contribute to commercial forecasting and budgeting as part of the management team
  • Work with managers and wider team to make sure the strategy is understood, championed & delivered
  • Ensure the consistent delivery of world class service, including complaints management, and work to continuously improve all aspects of the customer journey
  • Be accountable for the department’s Anti Money Laundering (AML) processes and compliance with The Property Ombudsman Code of Practice
  • Maintain our market position by ensuring the right type of homes are instructed
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sales and other peers to identify key areas for improvement and growth
  • Oversee departmental recruitment, induction programmes, ongoing team training and development
  • Effectively line manage our Appraisals managers, Principal Appraisals Specialist and Client operations manager
  • Undertake regular competitor and market analysis and report insights back to the team as appropriate
  • Forge new business streams and make connections for the business, undertaking high level client work as required

Knowledge & Skills

  • Commercial acumen and drive to deliver against targets
  • Deep experience in market appraisals for UK residential sales
  • Experience of leading sales or commercial teams
  • Demonstrable architectural design / built environment knowledge and interest
  • Excellent leadership skills (communication, collaboration, constructive feedback)
  • Ability to develop new and enhance revenue streams
  • Ability to lead and deliver cross departmental strategy within a commercial setting
  • Exemplary client and negotiation skills
  • Brand ambassadorial work


The Head of Appraisals Reports to the Commercial Director The Head of Appraisals works alongside other heads of department (for example, Head of Sales and Head of Prime Appraisals) and manages several roles.
