When the Salvation Army embarked on its global mission, it needed buildings in which to base itself: light, airy spaces, where people could seek respite and congregate happily. One such was this structure in Bradninch, East Devon. Very recently converted by its current owner and now on the market, this stunning family home was designed by Sir Oswald Archer, who directed the charity’s architectural designs from 1906 to 1936. With enviable beauty and a rich history to match, Salvation House is arguably one of the most captivating homes in town.
Located in the middle of Bradninch, a surprisingly small settlement not far from Cullompton, the house sits within a conservation area. The preserved countryside beyond can be seen from the roof terrace, which features a remarkable geodesic dome for rainier days. The house’s façade is notable for its pretty brick-bond pattern, its mixed-brown hues contrasting with its surroundings and setting the house a tier above the rest when seen from afar – talk about love at first sight. Renovated to maintain as much of its original build as possible, Salvation House still features the steel used in its initial assembly, which makes the integration of an electronic roof hatch (and the wonderfully sophisticated staircase leading up to it) even more awe-inspiring.
The interiors of Salvation House are what make it a true marvel. Upon entering, you’re transported to a contemporary monochromatic rendition of the Art Deco era. (You’d be forgiven for expecting to see Leonardo DiCaprio ambling down the bespoke zigzag stairs, champagne in hand.) Towering sash windows allow ample amounts of natural light to brighten the soft white interior, while double-height ceilings lend the place a quiet sort of majesty, its sheer scale underscored by its achromatic elegance.
And we haven’t even got to the kitchen yet… Fitted with a Falcon range cooker and an instant hot-water tap, it’s indicative of the current owner’s emphasis on creature comforts – also seen in the inclusion of three bathrooms in the floorplan, perfect for big families or multiple guests. Thoughtfully remade to be a home, Salvation House proves you can have it all: stature, history, style and serenity.
